    Das Boot

brady.jpgAll anyone really needs to know about Super Bowl XLII is, how bad is Tom Brady’s ankle? Last week he was photographed wearing a boot on his right foot, and Patriots coach Bill Belichick was his usual stoic self on the subject to the press, mumbling “no comment” to questions on his QB’s condition. Brady missed a practice last week, but yesterday he maneuvered well enough to put Patriot fans at ease about playing in the upcoming season finale, and for good reason. His backup, Matt Cassel, has never started an NFL game, and he probably won’t in the Super Bowl, either. However, if Brady’s ankle hinders him in the pocket, he could find himself under duress from the potent Giants pass rush, and if the Giants defense can knock him from the game or make him throw three interceptions like SuperBowl_XLII.jpghe did versus the Chargers, 19-0 could seem nineteen miles away. The Patriots enjoyed some pretty fortunate bounces and calls over the second half of the season, and having the Colts, Cowboys, and Packers all cleared from their path certainly made the road to the Super Bowl a little less rocky. However, if the Giants defense keeps Brady in check and Eli Manning doesn’t suffer a 4th-quarter meltdown like he did in their Week 17 meeting, Don Shula and the ’72 Dolphins might get a chance to pop that champagne cork one more time…
