Here's Salt in Your Eye, Marty!

schottenheimer_marty.jpgHey, I gotta admit it, I looked a little stupid back in January when I called for Marty Schottenheimer's firing  following an embarassing first-round playoff loss to the New England Patriots. This after posting a 14-2 record in the regular season, best in the NFL. A day or two later, the Chargers rubbed my nose in my blog by offering Schottenheimer a one-year contract extension for $4.5 Million, which Marty promptly turned down. Then offensive coordinator Cam Cameron left for the Dolphins head coaching down on January 19th, and last week Porky Pig left as defensive coordinator to coach the Cowboys, leaving the Schott to flap in the breeze in the final year of his contract. For team president Dean Spanos, that must've felt like renting the basement out to the ex-wife for a year while she tries to find a job and an apartment. Spanos said "not in my house" to Schottenheimer's (hey, that almost rhymes!) plan for hiring a new set of coordinators for 2007, because let's face it: if you don't like the bitch and you wanna throw her out, the last thing you need is her sisters moving in! So Spanos will start anew after dismissing the guy who is technically the "NFL's winningest active head coach", an ambiguous term which means you're either really, really good or really, Schottenheimer.jpgreally old. The timing of it all is truly a slap in the face for Marty, as head coaching vacancies in Miami, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Arizona, and Oakland have already been filled.  With the change in direction, two things seem certain: the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs are licking their chops after watching the dominant team in their division implode, and Marty's color-analyst career is about to undergo a sudden revival!
