The Top Ten Overplayed Songs of All Time

You know how this story goes. You meet someone--someone interesting, someone fascinating--and you fall in love. You can't seem to get enough of her (or him, whatever floats your boat) and you look forward to seeing her every day. Her voice is music to your ears, and you hope the good times will last forever.

Fast forward, ten...fifteen...twenty years later. She's still wearing those old clothes from the 70's & 80's, she's still singing the same old tune. Once you were in love. Now every time you hear those same old songs you want to run away or, worse yet, smash her in the faceplate. She's your radio. And she's not getting any better.

Here's my list of the Top 10 Overplayed Songs of All Time. You know the ones. The songs that...if you got stranded on a coconut island like Tom Hanks...only you never met Wilson the Volleyball or built a sailboat out of a garbage can...and you ended up starving to death twenty years later without ever hearing them again...then in the afterlife you were asked to recite the lyrics to these songs to St. Peter at the Pearly Gates... if that was the only way you'd get into Heaven... you'd be rattling them off in no time...and adding in an air guitar riff or two...and be skipping your way down the Yellow Brick Road with St Pauli's girls in each hand and a golden ticket to the Holy Buffet!

Here they are, in no particular order, the songs that have been permanently drilled into the fabric of your brain so effectively that, if any of them contain sublimal messages to overthrow the government or eat quiche, upon command you'd be sitting on top of the Washington Monument with egg on your face before you could say "John is the Walrus":

    1. Rolling Stones......................Satisfaction
    2. Billy Joel.............................Piano Man
    3. Lynnyrd Skynnyrd................ Sweet Home Alabama
    4. Meatloaf.............................Paradise By the Dashboard Light (including the Phil Rizzuto Rap-along session)
    5. Free..................................All Right Now
    6. Eagles................................Take it Easy
    7. Elton John...........................Rocket Man/Crocodile Rock (2-Box Set)
    8. John Cougar Menstralcramp ....Jack and Diane
    9.  U2....................................Pride (In the Name of Love)
    10. Rod Stewart.........................Maggie Mae

Don't get me wrong...most of these songs were great in their time...but, come on! The piano sounds like a carnival and the microphone smells like a beer--we get it, already! Satisfaction--a song that's been played on virtually every public am and fm radio station from here to Barrow, Alaska, (and probably the next jingle for Cialis)-- was released in 1965...42 years ago! You wouldn't expect the people of 1965 to be groovin' to Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith from the 1923 era, and you certainly won't expect anyone to give a damn about Justin Timberlake and Kelly Clarkson in the year 2049...so why is it we keep hearing these songs? Aren't there any NEW classics in the making?

Awesome post! I love reading about music (even when there are no good tunes to be found on the radio). I have to recommend MA's 100.9 FM. It's a refreshing station - if you can get it without much static - in the face of all the crap radio out there.
