    To the Coaching Guillotine!

simms.jpgIn an article to Superbowl.com, Phil Simms defends Marty Scottenheimer against all the rumblings that he should be fired for another quick exit from the playoffs despite compiling a now-meaningless 14-2 record, best in the regular season, and having arguably the NFL's best offensive weapon in Ladainian Tomlinson. In fact, it's not even arguable--this year, LT was the best player in the league, hands down.  Of course, Phil's no rocket scientist--he once proclaimed on the air that a Field Goal is almost as good as a Touchdown, a clarification all of us non-jock types have been thankful for ever since. In his article, Phil takes the Schottenheimer naysayers (say that five times fast!) to task espcially in regard to the 4th down Marlon McCree interception/fumble that should have virtually sealed the Chargers win. The argument he rebuffs is that McCree should've just knocked the ball down instead of intercepting it, and that while Scottenheimer's critics say that the coaches should have advised him to do so, McCree's instincts probably took over. On that point, I agree with Phil, but who cares? I'll reiterate: Schottenheimer's biggest mistake care after that, when he challenged a ruling he had no business challenging, thereby wasting a time out that his team desperately needed on their final drive. Compounding that gaffe was his hairbrained sidelines strategy to let the offensive and defensive coordinators to call the shots all game long but to retain autonomous control of the challenge flag with no headset and therefore no communication with his assistants before challenging the play. To that I say, "Guilty!" After compiling a 14-2 record with the best player in the league and winning home field advantage to the Super Bowl, and giving it all away to the aggrevating, opportunistic, dirty rotten Patriots, I say "guilty, guilty, guilty! Off with his coaching head! And let him eat cake with Phil in the broadcast booth!!!"
